Refreshing the Community

Category: Uncategorized

Author: Gary Johnson, Plant Operations Director

As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of our community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.

After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing our outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Plant Operations Director at Pinnacle Groves Senior Living, I focus on the steps that help our community look its best each spring.

Prioritizing Function First

For the spring refresh, the team evaluates functional needs before cosmetic updates. For example, repairing the irrigation system takes priority over planting flowers. Every update has a purpose, but not every update supports daily function.

The pond supplies the irrigation system, and a well feeds the pond. A float switch controls when the pump turns on and off. Each year, moss and pond grass interfere with the switch and prevent it from working properly.

To resolve this, the team cleared a large area around the switch. We also built a protective case around the float. The case still allows water to flow in, so the water level now controls the pump as intended.

Tracking Each Step

When starting a large-scale project, I create an Excel spreadsheet that outlines each stage of the job. I check off each step as the work progresses. This helps ensure nothing gets missed.

One common issue during spring startup is leaking irrigation lines. To help prevent this, I make sure the irrigation system shuts down and winterizes properly.

Next season, I plan to be more involved in shutting down and winterizing the irrigation system. This will help reduce or prevent frozen heads and damaged lines throughout the winter.

It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure Pinnacle Groves Senior Living continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
