Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Austin Styles, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Discover why culinary team members at Pinnacle Groves choose senior living, where listening, hospitality, and daily connection make a difference.

Building Stronger Relationships

As Culinary Director at Pinnacle Groves, I chose senior living because I wanted to build more meaningful relationships with the people I serve. In a traditional restaurant, a guest may compliment the food or share great feedback. Still, you may never see that person again.

Senior living creates a different kind of connection. The culinary team sees residents often and gets to know them over time. Those daily moments help build trust, familiarity, and friendship.

Residents have also taught me that life is fragile. Their stories are a reminder not to waste any moments. A meal, a conversation, or a simple act of care can become meaningful when it is shared with intention.

One favorite tradition is Friday Happy Hour. These events bring residents together in a relaxed and social setting. They create time for connection, conversation, and the kind of hospitality that makes community life feel special.

Listening With Care

Success in culinary in senior living starts with listening. Listening is the key to understanding what residents need and what matters most to them. Residents want to feel heard, and they want to know someone cares.

That care can show up in many ways. It may be remembering a favorite dish, checking in during a hard day, or taking feedback seriously. These small actions help residents feel valued and supported.

One meaningful moment came when a resident’s family shared how much the culinary team’s care meant to their mother. They said she often talked about how I helped brighten her day during a rough patch.

That moment was a powerful reminder. This work is not only about food. It is about presence, kindness, and helping residents feel seen during both joyful and difficult seasons.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
